A thousand cakes raises a thousand pounds!
On Saturday July 10th 2010 Mothers' Union Deanery Leader, Jeanette Appleton, got up at 5am and started to bake 1,000 cakes at her local church centre (St Michael and All Angels, West Kirby) to raise funds and awareness for Mothers' Union world wide project work.
Jeanette was inspired by projects such as the one in Ethiopia, which provides cooking pots for families arriving in the refugee camps from nearby Sudan. Jeanette baked the 1,000 cakes using just bowls, spoons, knives and forks, in keeping with the utensils that the women use in the refugee camps.
The event was widely publicised and people, from all over the Wirral and as far afield as Chester, came to buy the cakes throughout the day. Over £1,100 was raised from the sale of cakes and through gifts on the day and donations via Jeanette's webpage www.justgiving.com/Jeanette-Appleton .It maybe too late to buy one of Jeanette's 1,000 cakes but you can sample her recipe for a cake baked in a mug in the microwave which you will find on Jeanette's webpage. While you are eating this delicious chocolate cake you may like to make your own donation.

Wirral North Deanery celebrated ten years of the literacy and development programme at a Eucharist service at St Michael and All Angels, Pensby on May 26th. The service was led by Reverend Paddy Benson, Kate Nelson sang an Anthem Psalm 23 and Reverend Gillian Rossiter, Rural Dean preached on the work of the literacy and development project.

Wirral North Mothers' Union held a 'WAGS and BAGS' event at St Peter's Church Centre, Heswall in March 2010. Friends, neighbours, church family and thanks to Radio Merseyside, listeners to the Roger Phillips show, were invited to go with their donation of new or nearly new items for local women's refuges. Did you know that women, who seek refuge from domestic violence, often leave their homes in the middle of the night with nothing, not even a bag of clothes? At a guess, we sent in excess of £3,000 of clothing to the women's refuges. We had plenty of younger people turn up and the children's play corner was put to good use. A huge thank you to the ladies in the kitchen who were wonderful and to those ladies who helped with the card stall and raffle - a real 'Deanery Team effort'.

Wirral North members took part in the Wave of Prayer on Thursday 11th March and are pictured at St Michael and All Angels, Newton, St Peter, Heswall and St John, Frankby

Jeanette Appleton was commissioned as Deanery Leader on Thursday 4th March at a service at St Michael and All Angels, Newton, West Kirby. Members from many branches attended the service.

Wirral North Project Work
Pensby Support Group for families who have had a baby cared for on a neonatal Unit
St Michael and All Angels Pensby
Last Tuesday of the month 10 - 11.45 am
Sue Burns and Audrey Leatham ( Back row) lead the Pensby Support group
Families who have had a baby on a neonatal unit often feel anxious and alone when their baby has been discharged home. Talking and sharing with people who have gone through the same experience makes a big difference. There are play facilities for children aged 0 - 5 years old and a warm welcome for parents, grandparents and carers. One lady came, whose premature baby was born 26 years ago. She spent the morning in the group and shared about her experience, including how it felt to be separate from her baby. As she left she said to Sue, ' I have laid a few ghosts to rest this morning'.

Many branches are involved in projects such as:
  • Open the book: which is about taking the Bible stories into school and bringing them to life through drama
  • Mums and Tots groups
  • Knitting for Neonatal Units and making Christening gowns and Gowns for burial
  • Supporting the Women's refuge: through donations of clothes and toiletries

2009 Events
Recently an Overseas Lunch was held when 96 members came and enjoyed food from around the world. Each branch put together a display table representing a country or countries, showing the valuable work that the Mothers' Union does in those places. The branch also provided a main course, and dessert that would be eaten in that country.
The magnificent amount of £776 was raised for Overseas Fund and the Kenyan Relief Fund.
