Diocesan Celebration of 140 years of Mothers' Union

On October 11th, Chester Diocese held a cheese and wine evening in honour of the 140th birthday of Mothers' Union. Some 70 members helped to celebrate the occasion with a welcome drink, followed by cheese and wine. Our Diocesan President welcomed the Lady Mayors of Chester and the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Cheshire and his wife. Rev Jenny Gillies, our previous Family Life officer, said Grace and reminded us that with God's love and guidance we can achieve anything. Then the great variety of cheeses on offer were tasted. While we ate, slides illustrating the work of Mothers' Union worldwide, in the UK and in our Diocese were shown. Amongst many examples, were those illustrating the fact that by the end of the year, 500,000 people will have been helped by Mothers' Union and since its inception in 2000, no less than 135,000 people have become literate through the Literacy Project.
At the event, awards were presented to members who had been nominated as being the 'best' in the Diocese in a variety of categories. Viv remarked that they had been chosen from those nominated and that, in many ways, we all deserved awards for the work done
